THE CHALLENGE PRODUCERS FACE

Producing a breakaway roping has never been easy. Between record cattle prices and entry fees that are half of what a team roping generates, turning a profit on a breakaway roping has been challenging.

BPI changes that equation.

By introducing numbered divisions to your breakaway roping, you're not just adding a category — you're expanding your entire customer base. Ropers who previously wouldn't enter an open event because they knew they couldn't compete will now have a division to call their own. More ropers means more entries, more entries means bigger pots, and bigger pots means more ropers. The cycle feeds itself.

The infrastructure is already built. BPI provides the classification system, the data, and the framework — all you have to do is open more divisions and watch your participation numbers grow. Numbered breakaway roping gives producers a legitimate path to not just break even, but to build a roping that ropers come back to every time.

How To Incorporate BPI Into Your Operation

Numbered Divisions The most straightforward implementation. Structure your roping with individual divisions based on BPI classifications, giving every level of roper their own competitive field.

Consider this: instead of running a single open roping that draws 100 entries, you run an open division and a #3 division that each draw 75 entries. You just increased your total entries by 50% — and with it, your revenue. And while each individual roping may be slightly lighter than your old open, ropers will walk away feeling like it was a better experience because they were actually competing against ropers at their own level. That's the kind of event ropers tell their friends about and come back to. More divisions means a broader customer base, bigger collective pots, and a more competitive atmosphere at every level.

How To Incorporate BPI Into Your Operation

Slide or Handicap Ropings An equalizer format that allows all levels of ropers to compete directly against each other in a single go. Time is added or subtracted based on each roper's BPI number, leveling the playing field and creating a competitive, exciting format that works for any size event.

Not Ready To Go All In? Start With A Sidepot Run your normal open roping and add a BPI incentive or sidepot alongside it. It's a low-risk way to test the system — and the upside is real. Taking out 10–20% of the sidepot creates additional revenue for your operation, and perhaps more importantly, it brings ropers through the gate who otherwise wouldn't have entered. More bodies, more entries, more money — without overhauling the way you already run your event.

How to get started

01. contact us

Contact Breakaway Performance Index to receive information on incorporating our classification system into your operation. All the resources needed to get your event structured and running under the BPI format will be provided.

Using BPI classifications is, and always will be, complimentary for all producers.

02. PRoduce Events

BPI is a classification system, not an event producer or roping association. Our sole purpose is to provide a classification system that helps grow the sport and helps you grow your events, and we have no interest in going beyond that scope. Run your breakaway roping the way you always have, now with BPI classifications integrated into your format. We don't require any specific software or platform, and we have no interest in dictating how you run your business. We are here to help producers, not tell them how to run their business or compete against them. All producers have full access to the BPI membership database to verify classifications to maintain the integrity of the system at each individual jackpot.

03. Submit results

Establishing a true universal handicapping standard for breakaway roping requires one thing above all else: event data. In exchange for free access to the BPI classification system, all we ask is that producers submit full event results upon conclusion of their roping.

Results can be submitted by email or text in any format — a spreadsheet, a document, or even a photo of handwritten timer sheets. We simply ask that submissions include money won and all times of all runs where available.

Additionally, all ropers competing in a numbered roping utilizing BPI handicaps are required to hold an active BPI membership. Memberships are complimentary for all ropers for the 2026 season, making it a simple and painless requirement for both producers and competitors alike.

This is the only obligations we place on producers. It is the foundation of a mutually beneficial relationship — one that strengthens the classification system, improves the competitive experience for ropers, and continues to grow the sport for everyone involved.

A BETTER FUTURE FOR BREAKAWAY EVENTS

The growth of breakaway roping depends on giving every roper a legitimate shot at being competitive — and giving every producer a legitimate path to profitability. BPI was built to accomplish both. Partner with BPI to bring numbered divisions to your operation, expand your customer base, and build events that ropers return to. The infrastructure is in place, the classifications are ready, and the system is free to use. All that's missing is your event
